Trying to hold a plank for even thirty seconds and feeling your whole body shake says a lot about how much work your core still needs.
Each of these nine exercises trains a different part of your core, together they cover your whole midsection.
Plank
The plank is an isometric hold that activates the entire abdominal wall simultaneously along with the shoulders, glutes and lower back muscles, the body forms a straight line from head to heels with weight resting on forearms and toes.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Full core, shoulders, glutes | 3-4 | 30-60 sec hold |
Bicycle Crunch
The bicycle crunch targets the rectus abdominis and both oblique muscles through a rotational movement, one elbow reaches toward the opposite knee while the other leg extends straight, alternating sides in a pedaling motion.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Rectus abdominis, obliques | 3-4 | 15-20 per side |
Hanging Leg Raise
The hanging leg raise challenges the lower portion of the rectus abdominis along with the hip flexors, performed while gripping a pull-up bar the legs are lifted straight or bent toward the chest, controlled lowering prevents momentum from taking over.
This exercise also strengthens grip and shoulder stability making it valuable for athletes and general strength training.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Lower abs, hip flexors, grip | 3-4 | 8-12 |
Russian Twist
The Russian twist emphasizes the oblique muscles through a controlled rotational movement, seated with knees bent and torso leaning slightly back hands or a weighted object move from side to side, feet may stay grounded or lifted for added challenge.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Obliques, rotational power | 3-4 | 12-16 per side |
Mountain Climbers
Mountain climbers combine core activation with cardiovascular conditioning, starting in a high plank position the knees drive rapidly toward the chest in alternating fashion, the abdominal muscles stabilize the torso while the hip flexors and shoulders work continuously.
This exercise raises heart rate quickly making it useful for fat loss alongside core strengthening goals.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Core, hip flexors, cardio | 3-4 | 20-30 sec fast pace |
Dead Bug
The dead bug exercise trains coordination between the abdominal muscles and the limbs, lying on the back with arms extended toward the ceiling and knees bent at ninety degrees, one arm and the opposite leg lower slowly toward the floor before returning.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Deep core, lower back stability | 3-4 | 8-12 per side |
Cable Woodchopper
The cable woodchopper trains rotational strength through a diagonal pulling motion, standing sideways to a cable machine the handle is pulled from high to low or low to high across the body.
This exercise mimics real life movements such as swinging or throwing while strengthening the obliques and engaging the shoulders, hips and legs together.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Obliques, rotational strength | 3-4 | 10-14 per side |
V-Ups
The V-up exercise challenges the entire rectus abdominis through a folding movement, lying flat with arms extended overhead the upper body and legs lift simultaneously to form a V shape with hands reaching toward the toes.
This exercise requires significant core strength and control making it effective for advanced trainees seeking intense abdominal contraction with every repetition.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Full rectus abdominis | 3-4 | 8-12 |
Side Plank
The side plank isolates the oblique muscles on one side of the body while also engaging the shoulders and hips, the body rests on one forearm with feet stacked and hips lifted to form a straight line, holding this position for time builds lateral stability which protects the spine during twisting and side bending movements.
| Target | Sets | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| Obliques, lateral stability | 3-4 | 20-40 sec per side |
